Paranormal Activity is the horror franchise that took over the horror industry back in the 2010s. Due to its unique horror style through found footage. Had a game announced back in 2024, titled Paranormal Activity: Threshold, and the team behind it would be Darkstone Digital and indie developer Brian Clarke, the creator behind Mortuary Assistant, which was a big hit in the horror sphere. Now, as of May 7, 2026, the game has been officially canceled as Brian Clarke announced that he and DarkStone Digital will be stepping away, as the reasoning behind it is that the game needed more time to be developed, and once requested to Paramount, the IP holders they were not allowed a time extension, so they chose to part ways instead of rushing the game.
I have a very important announcement everyone. Please have a read. Thank you all for your ongoing support of my work and love for indie games as a whole. 🖤🖤 pic.twitter.com/kmCS3t3BTq

When it comes to indie development, it’s much harder to make games because teams and budgets are much smaller, but because of this, lots of great games are made, as the ones that go through this are made by passionate teams and developers who love the craft. DarkStone Digital and Brian Clarke are passionate developers who love horror and understand how to make a great horror game, as evidenced by Mortuary Assistant. So it comes as a shock to many that Paranormal Activity: Threshold was canceled, as it was highly anticipated and developed by a beloved team. And the reasoning behind it is such a bummer, as the team needed more time. As Brian Clarke put it, “DreadXP stood by my need for more time and, together, we made a request to Paramount for a time extension.” Unfortunately, they were denied the request and were left with two options: rush development and release a sub-par product, or go their separate ways, and Brian chose the latter. DarkStone Digital and Brian Clarke thanked the fans and Paramount for the chance to work with them and the IP, and will soon move on to new types of horror.
Video Game development has become much harder as the gaming sphere continues to expand, and games are being either shut down or canceled, and that sucks as the games become what could have been. But it’s extremely commendable what Brian Clarke and DarkStone Digital did. Instead of rushing a game and possibly releasing it in a terrible state, they chose to stop development and part ways professionally. It sucks that another game has now been canceled this year, but at least this isn’t the end for DarkStone Digital and Brian Clarke, as Brian said he needs a bit of a vacation, then he’s back to the drawing boards, which is awesome to hear, so I wish them luck on their next horror project.
