A new mystery is about to unfold. Oxenfree is a supernatural / horror graphic adventure game that was released back in 2016. The game was praised for its strong audiovisual presentation and won Excellence in Visual Art in the Independent Games Festival Award back in 2016. During the recent Nintendo Indie World Showcase, Night School Studios released a trailer for the upcoming installment in the series revealing the release date.
This new mystery takes place 5 years after the events of the first game. With an all-new story and characters, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals follows the story of Riley Poverly. She is an environmental researcher who returns to her hometown of Camena to investigate weird events that are happening in town. TVs are turning on and off, planes have lost their radar and radio stations can’t broadcast due to static interfering with the equipment. Riley then learns of the supernatural events that have happened on Edwards Island. She then claims that a cult had opened a portal there. Her friend Jacob asks her if they are the right person to investigate the matter. She informs him that they have been all over, seen other timelines, been to the past and there is no one else who can take on this case. Then we see a montage of Riley exploring various locations of the game where players will explore, climb and repel on the dangerous landscapes of the island as she searches to unravel the mystery of the radio waves.
As a narrative game, players will have to make decisions in the dialogue choices they are given. Every choice players make will affect the story and will shape Riley’s character, the relationships with other characters and how the story unfolds. Players will need to tape into eerie sounds and static using the radio mechanic. This is how you will communicate with the supernatural and manipulate the world around you as you travel to the past by tuning into time tears which are fissures in time-space. The walkie-talkie system will let players chat with contacts Players will also follow Riley on her quest to stop the cult, Parentage who are trying to open the portal for nefarious purposes.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is scheduled to be released July 12, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, PC via Steam and will also launch on mobile on Netflix and is included with all Netflix membership options. The game is available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation™ Store.
