Director Jeff Kaplan announced during a New York City press conference event that more animations are in development for Overwatch. He stated “The animated shorts are probably the thing that we have the most fun making, We really love working with our animation group and digging out the stories not tied to any constraints of gameplay we can tell any stories we want.”
Kaplan also said that he feels “The Last Bastion” which premiered at Gamescom this past August had marked the end of the first season of animated shorts. Fans seem to have taken a liking to the series due to the fact that they add to the lore factor of the roster characters that star in them. The first season has included characters such as Tracer, Widowmaker, Genji, Hanzo, and Soilder: 76, but there are still a lot more heroes that have not gotten their own shorts. This also gives creative freedom and a number of possibilities for developers in season two.
However, Kaplan did highlight that creating these shorts does take an ample amount of time. He also gave an idea on how the studio thinks of terms of what shorts to create. “They take a long time,” Kaplan told Polygon. “We think of them as in seasons. That’s how we talk about them internally. So our first season started with ‘Recall’ the Winston short and ended with The Last Bastion.” The date for the second season’s debut is not yet known but Kaplan stated that the they are “making good progress.”
