Blizzard announced today that they will be having an event in which Playstation 4 and Xbox One players will be able to download Overwatch for free. The event will only run for a certain time but should give players a good deal for the game and decide whether they want to purchase it or not.
Players will be able to download Overwatch between September 9th through the 12th. The version that will be downloadable will only allow people to have access to the, “full roster of 22 heroes and 13 maps available for play in a variety of modes, including Quick Play, Custom Games, and the latest Weekly Brawl. You’ll also be able to level up, earn Loot Boxes, and unlock different customization options via the Hero Gallery”. Players will be unable to obtain any Trophies or Achievements with this version.
The event will begin on September 9th at 11am PT and run until September 12th at 4pm PT. Once the clock strikes 11am on the 9th players will need to download the game via their perspective consoles. Here is a step by step guideline provided in the announcement:
Playstation 4
Step 1: Turn on your PlayStation 4 and log in to your preferred local user.
Step 2: Go to PlayStation Store and select “Search” from the top menu.
Step 3: In the search field, type in “Overwatch.”
Step 4: Select “Overwatch Free Weekend” from the search results and then click “Download.”
Step 5: Once the download and installation process is complete, click “Start” to begin!
Xbox One
Step 1: Turn on your Xbox One and log in to your Xbox Live account.
Step 2: Go to the Xbox One Store, then select “Search.”
Step 3: In the search field, type in “Overwatch.”
Step 4: Select “Overwatch: Origins Edition Free Weekend” from the search results and then click “Free Trial.”
Step 5: Once the download and installation process is complete, click “Launch” to begin!
Make sure before you download the game to check that you have the appropriate room on your system’s hard drive. The Playstation version will be roughly 9gb while the Xbox One version will come in at 15gb. Playstation players will not need a Playstation Plus Membership to download Overwatch. Xbox One players will however need to have Xbox Live Gold.
Any progression made while playing in the free to play event will carry over to anyone wishing to purchase the game. This includes, ” levels as well as skins and other items you get from Loot Boxes, will carry over to the full game if you purchase Overwatch: Origins Edition”.
