Jeff Kaplan, director of the popular gaming franchise Overwatch, has recently released a new development update. As of now, Overwatch seems to have plans on continuing Competetive Open Queue permanently. Kaplan explains that while this mode of the game is not popular in America, it is highly popular overseas (even becoming the top five game mode in South Korea. “It’s actually been fascinating to watch the response to Competitive Open Queue,” Jeff said. “Across the world, people play Competitive Open Queue in very different ways.”
This mode lets players choose who they want without the limitations of 2-2-2 Role Queue mode. It is set to leave from player’s game queues for a while and then return in an updated version mid-June.
As many people have concerns about the queue time before their rounds actually start, Kaplan says that this will, in fact, shorten the wait time. For concerns of Open Queue being available as a Competitive option, Kaplan clarifies that these matches will be “turned and balanced around” by developers.
At the same time as Competitive mode being a permanent fixture, Kaplan also states that another mode will be tested on the heroes. This update happened on May 11th and is expected to change the number of DPS and Tank heroes that will be allowed in battle. All of these updates are not a part of the Overwatch Anniversary event, which will be taking place sometime this week on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. (May 12th through the 17th).
While Overwatch is having a soon to come update, many other games are experiencing updates and new features as well. Riot Games has revealed a new update concerning one of their popular League of Legends characters, and The Last of Us Part II has recently dropped new trailer explaining how dark the story is going to be.
