A journalist by the name Jason Schreier at Bloomberg has confirmed in his book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment, that Blizzard has an Overwatch mobile game in development. The book interviews more than 3oo former and current employees and discusses a range of information from the mass layoffs of the company, to game development.
In the book, Screier brings up multiple topics involving the turmoil Overwatch saw over the past few years. He speaks on how Overwatch 2 was supposed to have a PvE mode, but was canceled due to the poor sales of the game. He also brings up the fact that an Overwatch Netflix series was inbound, but was scrapped due to Blizzard suing Netflix.
To add a positive note to the highlighted downside, Screier confirmed that Overwatch Mobile is currently in development. He states:
Overwatch was led by Walter Kong, who oversaw the release of regular heroes and content for Overwatch 2, as well as new projects like a mobile version of the franchise.
The book did not specify on a release date of the project and it also doesn’t specify whether it would be a direct port of the vanilla game, or a completely new and fresh concept. Overwatch would not be the Activision title to dive into the world of mobile gaming. As of 2023, Call of Duty Mobile was confirmed to be larger than the mainline series, surpassing $3 billion in revenue. Activision followed it up with announcing Warzone Mobile which saw 50 million pre-registrations before its release in March of 2024.
Recently, Overwatch 2 has been seeing around 60,000 peak players and currently has around 35,000 concurrent players. Also, since plateauing after the first month of its release, it hasn’t seen much of a drop in concurrent players, ranging consistently from 30,000 to 60,000 depending on events in the game.
