Overwatch League Expansion Teams Hangzhou and Vancouver Announce Team Names and Colors

Two more Overwatch League expansion teams have recently announced their team name and colors, following a brief radio silence from the remaining teams after the Paris Eternal, Guangzhou Charge, and Chengdu Hunters announced theirs. Introducing the Hangzhou Spark and the Vancouver Titans, two of the final three teams to reveal their identities to the world. Announcing first couple of weeks ago were the Hangzhou Spark. According to a press release by the team, the color scheme will be pink as their primary color, and white and blue secondaries. The color scheme treads a different path than the rest of the league, being the first team to incorporate pink into their character skins. “The vibrant color combination represents the fast-growing city of Hangzhou, which is in the process of transforming into an international destination.”

The logo chosen for the unconventional colors is a hand in finger-gun form with a spark graphic around it. The press release states that the name Spark was chosen as it “symbolizes extreme speed and power, and also represents the electric nature and creative spark of the bilibili brand.” The team, owned by bilibili, has recently established bilibili Esports Company, appointing Ms. Chen Youyou, an industry vet with experience in managing and operating esports teams, as president.

Announced yesterday was the Vancouver Titans, the second Canadian Overwatch League team. According to a press release put out by the team, the colors will be blue primary and green secondary with white accents. The logo features a large Sasquatch head “with the monogram of a ‘V’ in the nose for Vancouver, and a mountain range on the top of its head. The team name of the Titans is indicative of the traits associated with the Sasquatch–a powerful, imposing, and mythical being.”

The color palate was chosen to mirror the colors of the NHL team from the city, the Vancouver Canucks. It’s an unsurprising choice after learning that the owners of the team, The Aquilini Group, are also the owners of the Canucks. In an exciting treat for fans of both Overwatch League and NHL hockey, the team was revealed last night at Rogers Stadium, where thousands of fans came to watch the Vancouver Canucks take on the Dallas Stars. Unfortunately the ‘Nucks were handed a 2-1 loss that game; hopefully this isn’t foreshadowing of the inaugural season for the Titans.

With the announcement of the Hangzhou Spark and the Vancouver Titans, only one team remains in the shadows. Washington D.C. remains the final of eight expansion teams to release their brand to the world, a world that waits in anticipation. Overwatch League Season 2 kicks off February 14, 2019.
