To celebrate the release of Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine and the new hero, Doctrine, Blizzard Entertainment has released a flythrough video of the new map: Watchpoint: Grímsvötn. Grímsvötn translates to “The Lakes of Grímur” from Icelandic, referencing both the Norse god Odin and Iceland’s most active volcano.
While other prisons are built to keep people in, Grímsvötn was built to make sure they never got out. Once an Overwatch Watchpoint, then controlled by Helix, the prison is now under Doomfist’s control and serves as a base of operations for him and his allies.
“Welcome to Grímsvötn” flashes across the screen before the camera pans to the namesake volcano and a small group of puffins. Before continuing further, players are warned that they are “now entering a maximum security facility.” A large robot is outside a room with “BREACH” written on the glass windows, an enclosure designed to protect facility personnel from attacks. Players are then shown the area around the enclosure, including an office, several ramps, and countless walls to attack from and hide behind. Lava is seen pumping through tubes around the prison, but once they break, the floor literally becomes lava.
There’s fire, ice, stolen technology, forgotten prisoners, and more… maybe take a second to look around between fights. As long as you don’t become the next permanent resident.
Aside from Doctrine and Grímsvötn, Season 5 promises “powers that get weirder every time [a hero] die[s],” the return of battle passes, a brand new Support role for Sombra, Wuyang’s pursuit of immortality, and a “tiny dancing frog” inside Lucio’s gun. Additionally, a limited time event called Overwatch x Shadow Monarch has begun with the release of this season, bringing “dark fantasy and high-impact anime style [together] to the fight for a better future.” This free update is available on all setups and consoles that can run Overwatch, as of October 6.
