Overwatch Gets New Animated Short and a New Map

Fans have always been massive fans of the legendary Overwatch shorts. They are beautifully animated short movies that help players dive deeper into the world of Overwatch through their favorite heroes. Many have been clamoring for a new short for a while now, and they finally got one of their top wishes. The all new D.va animated short was just unveiled to the entire world.

In the short, we get the origin story of Busan-born D.va, the esports champion turned ace pilot. We learn that she is part of a team of other MEKA users. When a brand new breed of omnic attacks a major city, D.va jumps into action solo despite protest from her colleague, Tae-Hun. The new omnics resemble an octopus or a squid and soar through the sky, but they are also equip with deadly rocket launchers. We get a look at D.va’s abilities in action, such as her defense matrix, rockets, self-destruct, and even her light gun.

While D.va does manage to save the day, it also gave us a look at the psychology behind D.va. It was revealed that she is restless, and even after successfully defending the city, takes no time to recuperate from the battle. She goes immediately back to work, and she states it is because she cannot rest in case she needs to protect her people. She wants to be able to defend everyone, but her colleague tells her that it is okay to ask for help and to not have the weight of the world solely on her shoulders. Since this animation takes place before D.va joins Overwatch, this most likely is a nod at why D.va joins the organization in the first place: to protect people without having to run solo each time.

At the end of the short, a new D.va skin was also revealed. It seems to be D.va’s outfit from her early years as a MEKA pilot, and she now sports an interesting green design.

In addition to this new short, a brand new map was revealed that is also related to D.va. The new map, Busan, is the birthplace of D.va, and will also be the next playable control map.

The map is akin to Nepal, Ilios, and so on. Each team will fight for control of one point, and once one team controls the point for the allotted time, then the round is taken in a best of 3 setting. The description of the map reads as follows:

Explore the serene setting of the Sanctuary, surrounded by an ancient temple, beautiful gardens, and historic architecture. Clash in the bustling metropolis of Downtown, where players will fight across a busy PC bang, flashy karaoke bar, and central light rail station (just watch out for the train). Contest for position in MEKA Base—home of South Korea’s frontline defense against the gwishin omnic attacks: D.Va and the rest of the MEKA squad. Teams must fight to hold each of the three stages to establish complete control of the city that refuses to surrender its way of life to any threat.

There are no set release date for the new D.va skin or Busan map. However, the map is currently playable on Overwatch‘s PTR.
