On Monday, November 17, the dedicated YouTube channel for Overwatch 2—the infamous team shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment—unveiled the latest addition to the game’s roster in the form of Vendetta—the series’ first-ever melee Damage role hero—with an animated cinematic detailing her backstory and connections to the well-known in-game map, Colosseo. Now, as of November 20, gamers have officially received gameplay trailer footage of Vendetta’s seemingly overpowered kit in action.
For Overwatch fans specifically, this gameplay trailer did keep up the tradition of the new hero killing off the previous season’s newcomer, as the trailer showcases Vendetta’s insane movement ability, which allows her to survive being booped into a bottomless pit by Wuyang, killing him in the process. It is clear by Blizzard’s announcement of a hero trial period being enacted for Vendetta’s release that she will likely be a rather divisive and incredibly powerful new addition to the cast. Gameplay trailer footage backs this assumption up, as we see her not only survive being booped off of the stage by Wuyang, but go on to kill him with her movement ability, tank a sword slash from Genji’s ultimate ability with her greatsword’s shield capability, throw her sword into the air to kill Juno, and then launch herself into the air to drop down, finally killing the enemy tank, Ramatra. Though this is only trailer footage, and her damage numbers will likely be tweaked so she doesn’t one-shot every enemy like how she does in this trailer, the fact that the developers are showing Vendetta effectively solo team wiping in her announcement trailer will likely raise some eyebrows in the game’s community surrounding the intended balance and meta of the upcoming new season.
Vendetta, the first melee DPS added to Overwatch 2, shares striking similarities at first glance with another greatsword-wielding melee damage role character, that being Magik, from NetEase’s Marvel Rivals. With her high mobility-focused moveset and powerful greatsword swinging combat, it is difficult not to see the similarities, given the hype surrounding Marvel Rivals just last year after stealing away a majority of Overwatch 2’s player base at the time.
This all being said, Vendetta will be releasing to Overwatch 2 on December 1 alongside the release of the game’s 20th Season. Players will be able to get their hands on the same Vendetta gameplay early, starting November 26 and ending December 1, just a few days before the new season releases on December 9.
