Over 9000 Zombies!, an indie 2-D top down shooter from developer Loren Lemcke and publisher Mastertronic, has put out a substantial update with additions and changes based on feedback from those who have purchased it in its still ongoing Early Access phase.
One of these additions introduces RPG elements to the game via a four-attribute system. In between the waves of zombies, players will be able to improve their Durability, Carnage, Resourcefulness and Engineering. Durability affects the amount of damage players can withstand before being turned into zombie food, Carnage affects the amount of damage they can inflict and the speed at which weapons are reloaded, Resourcefulness grants greater rewards from item pickups such as grenades, scrap metal and health packs, and Engineering, which improves the effectiveness of player-constructed turrets.
Speaking of turrets, this new v0.1.5.0 update also adds three new variants of them, namely a rail gun turret, plasma projector turret and white phosphorous launcher, all of which sound like they would go very well with zombies. All turrets will also act as their own light source and players won’t be able to clip through them, so it will now be important to formulate exit routes amidst one’s fortifications.
All player constructed buildings, turrets included, are also now vulnerable to being torn down by zombies, requiring that players pay more attention to what’s going on throughout their defensive line.
Aside from these additions, the game in general has been improved across the board, with numerous weapon stat balances, graphical improvements, bug fixes, and changes to the way zombies spawn (they now spawn off the map instead of around the player). The developers have also promised that a map editor will be added later on.
Over 9000 Zombies! is currently available on Steam at a 50% discount for $3.99, and with a strong response from gamers and consistent attention from its developers, the game looks to be worth picking up if its premise piques your interest.
