Outer Wilds is a first-person sci-fi adventure that takes place in a handcrafted solar system that is “trapped in an endless time loop”. The game resets itself every 20 minutes but remembers everything the player has done up to that point so players can use that knowledge to see how farther they can get each time the game resets itself to the game.
Outer Wilds has you play as the newest recruit of Outer Wilds Ventures, a space program searching for answers in the strange and constantly evolving solar system. In my hands-on time with the game at an event, I got the chance to see how the game plays and what tools you get to explore the universe. You have a space suit that limits how long you can spend outside of your ship which adds to the tension that you are on the clock before the game resets itself. Another tool that you will use is a scanner that allows you to track mysterious signals and decode messages. The game is all about exploration and discovery. Everything you do leads to new discoveries which lead to new mysteries and so on and so forth. This makes the game very intriguing because you’ll want to know what you’ll find next.
The game will be released on the Xbox One and PC via the Epic Games Store. Mobius Digital Games has said that anyone who backed the game on PC and was looking forward to adding the game to their Steam library “will get both an Epic key upon launch and a Steam key later when we release on those services, respectively”.
