In recent weeks fans of Tim Shafer and his cult classic Psychonauts have gotten a lot of exciting news. First with the announcement of Psychonauts 2 and its fundraising campaign on Fig. Then the subsequent announcement saying that it had been fully funded. Now it seems that there is a bit more good news to go along with it. By way of the PlayStation Blog, it has been announced that the original Psychonauts will be coming to PS4!
Psychonauts is an action platformer about circus runaway Raz and his adventures into the minds of his fellow campers at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, and was released back in 2005 on Windows, Xbox and PS2. While considered a commercial failure, the game gained cult appeal from both developers and average gamers alike being praised for its funny dialogue and unique level design.
The game’s announcement was made by James Spafford Community Manager over at Double Fine. When asked if Psychonauts would be a port of the PS2 version or a full on remaster Spafford responded with,
It will be an emulated version of the original Psychonauts on PS2, but hopefully with some added bells and whistles which we’re still figuring out now.
The PS2 port of the game was made by Budcat Creations and is considered to be a poor port of the game due to poor framerate, subpar graphics and other glitches.
Spafford sounded optimistic when asked about trophy support in the final game saying, “We’re hopeful it will, we’ll be figuring that out soon!”
Psychonauts for PS4 is slated to be released sometime in the spring.
