Flappy Bird was a huge hit when it was originally released in 2013. Even with all of its success, creator Dong Nguyen unexpectedly removed it one year later, in 2014. From this point on, there have been no updates, until last week.

Nguyen pulled Flappy Bird a decade ago during its popularity. “Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed. But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever,” he once told Forbes back in February of 2014.

Nguyen’s Twitter statement confirmed that he has no involvement with the still-developing game and didn’t sell the original version. He also mentions that he doesn’t support crypto. Many sources, including People Magazine, reached out to Nguyen and the new game creators for additional information on this.

Nguyen said he never gave up the rights to the game. According to the Flappy Bird Foundation, it had “acquired the rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC,” away from Nguyen and they secured the trademark. Gametech also stated  Nguyen had the chance to reclaim the game but failed to, causing the game’s trademark to be abandoned and any previous rights to be terminated. Due to this, the Flappy Bird reboot will be available on iOS and Android in 2025. Even with that, there have been no deals made with Nguyen personally.

Unfortunately, this is all the information that has been made public thus far. However, Flappy Bird is still being developed, so more information may become available in the future.
