Original Bioshock Devs Conjure an Otherworldly First-Person Roguelite with City of Brass

From the former senior developers of the first two Bioschock games comes the first-person dungeon crawler, City of Brass.

Formed in 2011 by Ed Orman, Andrew James and Ryan LancasterUppercut Games started as an independent development team in Australia later adding John Travers, Taamati Te RataEvan Zachariadis and Ben Driehuis. Before today, the studio has released repertoire of games including the artistically expansive Submerged & happily quirky Danger Dodgers.

Per the developers:

Leaping from the pages of the Arabian Nights, adventure awaits in the accursed City of Brass – a place of legend, filled with danger and reward. Infested with mischievous spirits and deadly traps, its shifting streets are brimming with the wealth of a nation.

Assume the role of a cunning thief, battling to reach a fabled treasure at the city’s heart, wielding a blade and whip that can be used to disarm, trip or stun enemies, to swing to safety, grab inaccessible objects or even break through flimsy barricades.

Leap across pits, slide under blades, dodge spears, and sidestep poison gas traps – all the while manipulating hazards to your advantage against diverse spirit foes.

Not to be confused with the now popular genre of roguelikes, the designers have labeled City of Brass as roguelite with their creative decision to present unique first-person action mechanics over traditional turn-based combat. As seen in the trailer, players interact with the environment and enemies in a rhythmically fluid dance of dash and slash.

Everything in the game is procedurally generated as the developers express:

No two playthroughs are ever the same: play, die, and play again, each time using what you’ve learned to get further. Are you tenacious enough to reach the heart of the City of Brass?

Throughout each run players will find reminiscent powers and vendors that will aide their quest to effectively loot the vast treasures of this vibrant city.

The creative team has also taken into account that not every player will enjoy the exact same game difficulty or play style, so in contrast to City of Brass‘s procedural generation, player-controlled parameters were added:

Tailor the challenge to your playstyle with Blessings & Burdens – optional modifiers that tweak everything from player health to enemy damage, ensuring City of Brass is tuned for every player.

Like the now-infamous game that the founding members of Uppercut Games previously developed, City of Brass gives the air of a title best defined through each player’s particular reaction to the immersive world and action. Pick it up today for $19.99 on Steam, the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live.
