Executives from Obsidian, the developer behind popular titles such as Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, were recently interviewed by The Game Business. The two interviewees were Marcus Morgan, Obsidian’s VP of operations, and Justin Britch, Obsidian’s VP of production. During the interview, Morgan and Britch discussed fan expectations for a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas and the company’s desire to continue pursuing original IPs.
One topic discussed during the interview was fan desires for a new installation in the Fallout series, such as a potential sequel for Obsidian’s game Fallout: New Vegas. The latter Fallout title was released in 2010 and continues to be praised by both fans and critics alike. The game currently sits at an “overwhelmingly positive” rating on Steam and a “generally favorable” Metacritic score. The first season of Prime Video’s Fallout TV series had a similarly positive reception, with a matching “generally favorable” Metacritic score and many fans eagerly awaiting its upcoming second season.
The popularity and acclaim of the Fallout IP has led to many fans questioning when Obsidian’s next Fallout title will be released, with Morgan stating “I know everyone on the internet, on every game we announce, asks: When’s the next Fallout: New Vegas?” However, Morgan expressed concern about the impact Fallout may have on Obsidian’s identity. The concern originates from the externality of Fallout’s IP, as the series belongs to Bethesda Softworks rather than Obsidian. Morgan further clarifies that “we’ve worked on Fallout, so it can’t help but be somewhat ‘are we just trying to be like that?’”
In order to establish a more distinct company identity, the studio has decided to focus on further developing their original IPs. Obsidian’s recent game releases center around original IPs, with the studio’s 2025 releases consisting of Avowed, Grounded 2, and The Outer Worlds 2. Focusing on original projects, according to Morgan, was intended to “more clearly define what it is to be Obsidian as a standalone entity, as opposed to chasing after what already exists.”
Morgan also expressed a feeling of “joy” in regards to creating and building these original IPs, with Britch further describing the studio’s pride in the recently released The Outer Worlds 2. Britch explains that “We want The Outer Worlds 2 to be big” and that the team “waited a while to show Xbox the game, because we knew that it was going to be something that was special.” The Outer Worlds 2, which was released on October 29th, currently sits at a “mostly positive” rating on Steam.
Morgan and Britch did not confirm whether or not the studio would produce another Fallout title in the future. However, it is safe to say that Obsidian will continue to support and invest in its original IPs, such as The Outer Worlds series.
