It seems that horror has been heading north recently, with Scandinavia and specifically Norway serving as a local or lore related backdrop for horror recently. Alan Wake 2 and Senua‘s Saga: Hellblade 2 both lean on these backdrops, and now it seems another will join the ranks.
Nowhere, an upcoming investigative horror game from Midnight Forge, will have players exploring the titular location, pursued by the vestiges of the Norse Gods, who ended up here after Ragnarok – the mythological Norse Apocalypse. According to the game director Luke Dodds, the game will also draw from themes of the religious conflicts that arise as Christianity attempts to convert Norse indigenous beliefs. The game apparently may even feature Norse deities as the main source attempting to hunt players down as they navigate the foggy landscape.
Nowhere will apparently be an open world exploration, with environmental storytelling being a big factor in the game’s overall story. As players explore new areas, Dodds wanted to stress a consistent theming across the space highlighting “symbolism, music, and atmosphere” as three design tenets of the game. The dense fog and skeletal-like enemies showcased in the interview definitely call to mind Silent Hill as a keen inspiration for the landscape of Nowhere. The titular realm exists outside of regular reality but due to unknown events has started seeping into Earth, hence the events of the game.
Luckily, Nowhere’s detective story focus won’t leave characters to brave the dark alone a la Amnesia, instead some classic survival horror elements like weapons, ammo, and resource management seem guaranteed to make an appearance.
Overall, Nowhere seems to be an excitingly ambitious detective horror game that will embroil players heavily in Norse mythology as they attempt to discover why the Nowhere and Earth seem to be merging or colliding in horrifying ways.
