No, GTA VI is Not Coming Out 2019 As Far As We Know

Players in GTA Online have been receiving messages from Rockstar claiming that GTA VI will be releasing in 2019. Unfortunately for those excited for a new game, official word from Rockstar reveals that these messages are hoaxes.

On July 1, many GTA Online players received a surprise when they booted up the game and got a message supposedly from Rockstar Games. These messages announced that GTA VI would be releasing in 2019, and sometimes advertising pre-orders on Rockstar’s official site. Many people were naturally excited about this announcement.

Others, however, were more wary. Among these was GTA photographer Alex Crowley. He posted on Twitter about the announcements, referring to them as fake. His tweet also revealed that these fake announcements seemed to be causing real problems in-game, such as crashing or session errors.

Rockstar has confirmed in an official tweet that these messages are fake:

One of the key hints that the messages are fake is the fact that the messages only appear for people playing on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Meanwhile, players on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One have not reported any of those messages. The affected platforms have been modded and hacked for years now (at their own peril, due to the fact that mods and hacks are only allowed in the single-player story mode), so it would seem that the messages are just another exploit.

Of course, just because the messages being sent out are fake doesn’t mean that GTA VI isn’t in the works. Rockstar is a secretive company, and with a project as newsworthy as GTA VI, they could easily dominate the news cycle with an announcement, even in news companies focused on world news. Right now, Rockstar is most likely focused on the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, releasing October 26. Meanwhile, GTA 5 is less than three months away from its five-year anniversary.
