Three GameBoy games, including one classic Mario title, is headed to the Nintendo Switch. In a post from Nintendo’s official X/Twitter accounts, the company revealed that Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Baseball we’re coming to Nintendo Switch Online Members for its May 2024 Update.
Additionally, Nintendo announced the addition of Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru for Nintendo Switch Online as a Japanese exclusive.
Initially released in 1989, Alleyway lets players take control of Mario as he pilots a spaceship to destroying blocks aka Space Grids via deflecting an energy ball.
Released also in 1989, Baseball let’s the player take control of either the pitching team or batting team for a classic game of baseball. When playing the pitching team, players can try to strike out the batter with fastballs. Playing as the batting team, players will need to time their hits right and carefully maneuver across the bases.
Lastly, Super Mario Land lets players take control of Mario on his very first handheld adventure. Players will need to help Mario traverse Sarasaland in order to rescue Princess Daisy.
These releases are in celebration of the Nintendo GameBoy’s 35 year anniversary, first releasing in Japan in the console first released in Japan in April 1989, US in July 1989 and Europe in September 1990.
Both the GameBoy and GameBoy Color combined sold over 118.69 million units globally, making it the not only the fourth best-selling consoles of all time but the third-best-selling handhelds of all time behind the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo has made strides in expanding its retro game library for users of the Nintendo Switch Online Membership. Already, users have seen titles from the Nintendo 64, Nintendo Entertainment System, and GameBoy Advance like Golden Sun, Star Fox, and Super Mario World.
