Nintendo Under Pressure to Increase Switch 2 Prices

Nintendo is not in the best position right now as its sales continue to decline. According to an article from Bloomberg, shareholders are reportedly putting pressure on the company to act on these falling profits, despite the fact that the Switch 2 is already selling at $449.99. Nintendo has apparently been falling in share price over the last year, even though the Switch 2 was selling well across the world (and in Japan in particular), and this possible bump in price would be a way of amending that. However, Nintendo has already upped the price of Switch 2 accessories, as well as increased the price of physical Switch 2 games, including pricing remasters up to $60.

Despite all of these price increases, Nintendo is still considering bumping up the price on the Switch 2, although one must ask if these price hikes for the console will end up hurting Nintendo, especially at a time where the global economy is at high vulnerability and that in countries like the United States, the job market is absolutely unstable, with people being unable to afford basic necessities, let alone game accessories. Nintendo could look to what other companies are experimenting with right now- Xbox has recently reduced the price of its GamePass subscriptions in response to feedback from players who said it was becoming increasingly unaffordable, which has garnered much positive reception from fans- although this is different than pricing a console, many consumers would say that making things more expensive makes it less accessible to the general public; that being said, it is yet to show if reducing prices will help Xbox.

In an age where games as a service is increasingly the norm, where freemium models reign dominant, making your content as reasonably affordable as possible is the key to success, but with the competition that exists today, many companies are taking on more controversial means to stay afloat.
