It’s no secret that Nintendo’s newest console, the Switch, has been selling very well. In fact, in its first two days on the market, the Switch sold more than any other Nintendo console in any of their first two days, including the Wii (which is currently Nintendo’s best-selling console), across the Americas and Europe. Plenty of retailers, such as GameStop, have sold out of Switch consoles due to the high demand.
Originally, Nintendo had planned to produce 8 million Switch units over the course of this coming fiscal year (April 1, 2017-March 31, 2018). However, according to The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo has recently decided to double the Switch’s production, changing its goal from producing 8 million units to 16 million units. This is probably smart move considering GamesIndustry.biz’s estimate that the Switch sold about 1.5 million units worldwide in just its first week, including 500,000 in the U.S. and 360,000 in Japan. Compare that with IGN’s report from 2006 that the Wii had sold 600,000 units worldwide in its first week. If Nintendo is able to sell all 16 million units it plans to produce, then at the very least the Switch will beat out Nintendo’s worst-selling console, the Wii U, which has only sold 13.6 million units worldwide since its release in 2012.
According to GameSpot, the Switch will be available again at GameStop as early as Wednesday, March 22. So if you’ve wanted a Switch but been unable to get one because it’s sold out in many places, you can finally get one next week, just as long as you act fast before they sell out again.
