Nintendo has published its latest earnings report for the publisher’s third quarter. The report has revealed that the Nintendo Switch has now sold 122.55 million units which surpasses the PlayStation 4 and Game Boy. This means that the Nintendo Switch has become the third best-selling video game console of all time. The Switch now sits behind the Nintendo DS at 154.02 million units sold and the PlayStation 2 at 159 million units sold. Nintendo has also revealed its new numbers for Switch software sales which reached 994.30 million during the third quarter where a game has become one of the Switch’s ten best-selling game of all time.
Talking about hardware sales, despite Nintendo Switch reaching the new milestone, units sold declined 21.3% year-on-year to 14.81 million units, “mainly due to a shortage of semiconductors and other component supplies that impacted production until around late summer,” Nintendo said. Nintendo noted that “diversification of motives for purchase supported sales of all three models.” The base Nintendo Switch console sold 5.22 million units. The OLED model sold 7.69 million units. The Switch Lite sold 2 million units. Nintendo also notes that the “number of annual playing users is increasing,” estimating around 112 million annual playing users from January to December 2022.
Total software sales declined by 4.0 year-on-year to 172.11 million units which Nintendo says was affected by the decline of hardware sales to some extent. Digital sales reached 310.0 billion yen, up 21.5 % year-on-year. Mobile sales declined 2.3% year-on-year to 38.9 billion yen. Total sales reached 1,295.1 billion yen. Overseas sales reached 988.8 billion yen which accounted for 76.4% of the total.
Talking software, there were 27 titles that were million sellers on the platform. Nintendo announced that Pokemon Scarlet & Violet reached 20.61 million units sold. This puts it into Nintendo Switch’s ten-best-selling games of all time. Spaltoon 3 reached 10.13 million units sold. Nintendo Switch Sports sold 8.61 million units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 6.66 million for a cumulative sales of 52.00 million units. Kirby and the Forgotten Land sold 3.47 million units. Nintendo said in its report that “unit sales of first-party software continue at the highest levels seen since the launch of Nintendo Switch.”
