The Nintendo Switch has achieved a very unique feat this past week. Initially reported by Japanese publication Famitsu, and then tweeted out by Game Data Library, the weekly Japanese top 30 best-selling games of the week list was unveiled and it produced an extremely surprising one. All 30 games on the list were Nintendo Switch titles, starting with Super Mario Maker 2 and ending with Minecraft at number 1. Now here’s the kicker, this is the first time in 30 years that only one console has had all 30 titles on the list. The last one to accomplish this feat? The Nintendo Famicom in 1988.
This was due in large part to a massive surge in sales by the aforementioned Minecraft. This is also the first time that the Mojang title actually topped the Japanese retail charts since it launched on the Switch more than 163 days ago. To make this even more insane, the title that originally held this record was Pokemon Red and Green, doing it in 1997 well after releasing for the Game Boy 89 weeks prior. Other notable titles on the list include The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury, and Monster Hunter Rise.
Game Data Library notes that this is an “unprecedented” event. This easily goes without saying as back in 1988, there really wasn’t that much competition for Nintendo in the home console market. Therefore, it’s not all that surprising to see the top 30 best-selling games in one week all be Famicom titles. Fast forward to 2021 and the gaming market is a completely different beast. Nintendo has both Sony and Microsoft to worry about, not to mention the PC gaming market. Despite all this, the Nintendo Switch seemingly achieved this near impossible feat.
This only adds to the legacy of the Nintendo Switch, which continues to dominate the market world wide. This is especially evident after the reveal of the new Nintendo Switch OLED Model, which has been insanely hard to find and pre-order since it was announced
