As for what to expect, we’ll have to wait and see. During the reveal, Nintendo showcased a new Mario Kart game and announced that Nintendo Switch 2 will play exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 games and will be backward compatible with both digital and physical Nintendo Switch titles. They did note that not certain Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
During Nintendo’s latest earnings report, President Shuntaro Furukawa said that he did not believe that the Switch 2’s announcement would have a significant impact on the current sales of the original console. He also said he company would continue to support Switch beyond Switch 2, as long as there is demand.
President Furukawa also talked about the pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2 and how inflation and the exchange rate will affect it. Furukawa said they have to take into account of Japan’s increased inflation rate and to consider that the exchange rate environment has changed considerably since the original Switch’s launch in 2017. Furukawa also noted that Nintendo has to consider “the affordability that our customers expect from Nintendo products”, saying the company needs to take all these factors into account when considering the price of its products.
Nintendo is taking all of the above into account when pricing Switch and that there are no plans to change the price of the original Switch at this time.
Speaking to Japanese press for the first time since Switch 2’s announcement, President Furukawa was asked how they plan to ensure a smooth launch following the original Switch’s history of stock shortages, which were often exacerbated by those seeking to resell consoles for profit.
“We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like),” Furukawa said. “We are making preparations.”
Following the Direct, Nintendo announced plans to hold Nintendo Switch 2 experience events around the world giving players the opportunity to try the new console hands-on. The event will begin in New York and Paris on April 4. It will move to various locations in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia over the following two months.
