Nintendo Shares New Classic 2D Events Reveal Trailer for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 during Gamescom 2019

Earlier today, into Day Two of Gamescom 2019, representatives from Nintendo of Europe sat down in an interview to talk in-depth about the upcoming next installment in Nintendo’s Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The game is expected to launch late this fall season on the Nintendo Switch.

Take a look at the interview below.

In the interview, representatives from Nintendo of Europe, Chris and Filippo, demonstrated some of the new and returning features for the newest addition to the series. The two also mentioned that players will be able to pick their preferred style of playing, choosing between making use of the motion controls (either using duel controllers or solo remotes) and using the traditional buttons.

Nintendo has added a couple of all-new Olympic sports to the game. In the video, the two showcased exciting gameplay for some of the newer sports included, inlcuding Sports Climbing and Karate. Similar to rock climbing, in Sports Climbing, players can choose between using the controllers or buttons as they attempt to race to the top of a towering climbing wall before time runs out. The two later showed off matches of Archery (a returning event). The final game will also include Skateboarding and Surfing as playable events.

However, the newest addition that has everyone talking about it is the new Classic 2D Events feature. This special inclusion is a “draw back to the past and a beautiful homage to the Olympic Games that took place in Tokyo in 1964.” Not only will players get to play in 3D, but now in classic 2D. Experience the 10m Platform (Diving), 400 Hurdles, Long Jump, Marathon, 100m, Canoe, Judo, Volleyball, Shooting, and Vault with your favorite characters in their old-school pixel models. Classic 2D events will be played using the traditional controls because, of course, there were no motion controls in the 1960s.

The game will be released exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Pre-ordering is currently available through a variety of retailers including Game StopBest Buy, and Amazon. Switch players can also pre-purchase the game through the Nintendo e-shop.
