Nintendo Set to Raise Prices of Physical Games by $10 Starting With Yoshi and The Mysterious Book

Nintendo announced on March 25, 2026, that physical and digital games will have price difference, with physical games costing $10 more. This price difference will begin in May, with the first title having its physical price increased being Yoshi and The Mysterious Book. The game was initially $59.99, but with this announcement, it is now $69.99 for the physical version. Digital games will be unaffected by the price increase. The reason for the price increase is to reflect the cost of distribution and production.

Nintendo issued statement about the price changes. “Beginning in May 2026, and starting with pre-orders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, new Nintendo published digital titles exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 will have an MSRP that is different from physical versions,” They also stated “Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games. As always, retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and pricing for each title may vary.”

The physical medium continues to suffer, especially with the rise of digital media in recent years. Physical games face the same problem that DVDs did with the rise of streaming. Physical games have changed over time. Because companies exclude physical releases or make physical release codes or keys for the digital store, you have to download it from the digital store instead of being able to own the game. And with this announcement from Nintendo, this is another nail in the coffin for the physical media market. This is also not new for Nintendo: with the release of the Switch 2, physical copies were replaced by codes you could download instead of physically owning a copy of the game.
