In their recent direct, Nintendo showed that one of the primary themes of Mario’s 40th Anniversary would be a celebration of the Super Mario Galaxy games. Between the second Mario movie sharing the spacefaring theme and the first case of Super Mario Galaxy 2 on a Switch console, fans of Mario’s 3D adventures on the Wii will have plenty of content. One of the more interesting points in the direct were the new features coming to both of the Super Mario Galaxy games on the Switch. Nintendo has now provided additional information in the form of an overview trailer for the combined games.

The trailer is focused on two things throughout its seven-and-a-half-minute runtime. The first is an introduction to the more iconic moments from the games and an explanation of the mechanics that make the games so unique. It brings special attention to the powerups available in the games, some of which are unique to the Super Mario Galaxy games and are some of the best powerups in 3D Mario.

The most interesting part of the trailer came with the reveal of the additions to the base games that would be included in the Switch 2 versions. In the direct, Nintendo showed off new amiibos and storybook pages but never went into detail on them. The trailer first shows off some of the new pages, promising a story about a pair of luma twins with names suspiciously similar to the Mario bros. Next, they show off the new assist mode which has been appearing more consistently in Nintendo’s 3D platformers recently. In it, players will have double the standard health and will be able to recover after falling off the stage. Finally, the trailer goes over the functionality of the amiibo compatible with the game, with each of them able to spawn a unique mushroom.

Many consider the Super Mario Galaxy games to be the very best of 3D Mario, making it no surprise why Nintendo would choose to focus on them so much for the 40th anniversary. The release of the games on their latest console may introduce a whole new generation of fans to the largest scale of Mario’s adventures.
