After the slow start that the 3DS suffered and the relative failure of the Wii U Nintendo is doing everything it can to make sure that the NX doesn’t make the same mistake. In a report from MCV, it was said that Nintendo plans to release a new Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon title within the console’s launch window.
MCV writes that Pokémon developer Game Freak is will produce a new Pokémon game to the console, no word on if it will be a port of the upcoming Sun and Moon. As for Zelda, Nintendo has already announced that Breath Of The Wild will be a launch game for the console. Mario is still up in the air it could be another core entry like Super Mario Bros. U or something new. At E3 this year, IGN asked Shigeru Miyamoto about the next Mario and he had this to say.
We’re always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you’ll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two. Maybe next E3 we’ll be able to share something.
Nintendo is also looking to lock down more third-party, something the Wii U severely lacked. MCV says that the company has already signed on major companies like Ubisoft, Sega, Square Enix, Activision, and Warner Bros.
It also appears that Nintendo is trying to court the smartphone gamers with the NX. As the article say, “Nintendo [is] targeting an audience that sits between smartphone gamers and the more hardcore users of PS4 and Xbox One.” One exec that got to try out the console gave their opinion on the NX.
It’s a nice bit of kit, a bit of a novelty, but a good one. It won’t appeal to PS4 fans. Nintendo seems set on trying to upgrade smartphone gamers. That’s going to be a big job for the marketing department.
In an earlier report, we said that the NX would be a cartridge based handheld, home console hybrid. That info came from a Eurogamer article and sources at MCV have been able to confirm that report.
The NX’s reveal is still slated for September, possibly the same time as the Tokyo Game Show.
