Nintendo Not Raising Price of Switch and May Look Into Switching Packaging to Reduce Production Costs

Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa has announced that they are not planning to increase the price for the Nintendo Switch. While speaking with Nikkei, Furukawa said that the company wants to avoid “pricing people out” of the console.

Most consoles see a decrease in price after they have been released for the public for some time, but the current conditions in the market have not allowed Nintendo to do that with the Switch. Due to current market shortages and supply chain issues, the overall price of manufacturing the Switch has actually increased in recent months.

During the interview, Furukawa said “Our competition is the variety of entertainment in the world, and we always think about pricing in terms of the value of the fun we offer,”

As Nintendo looks for ways to keep the Switch profitable without increasing the cost for consumers, they likely have investigated many different routes they could take.

Nintendo has recently begun plans to implement new packaging for the hit console. The new box will be a relatively new design and help the company to meet their bottom line for various reasons, as well as helping to reduce general waste.

The new box for the Nintendo Switch will cut down cardboard by roughly 20% for each box. This reduction may not seem like a lot, but the Nintendo Switch is one of the most popular consoles available and the overall reduction will likely be fairly large.

Similarly, the Nintendo Switch OLED already utilizes packaging that is 14% less than the regular Switch. Nintendo will surely be looking towards the Switch OLED packaging for inspiration about how to most effectively reduce the packaging for their other consoles.

Although Nintendo is experiencing many of the issues other companies are with the supply chain, they are thinking of the consumers by choosing to remain consistent with their console prices.
