Nintendo recently announced they will close their popular social service, Miiverse, which is exclusive to the WiiU, and 3DS family consoles. Accessibility of Miiverse on the internet will also close once the service is shut down.
Miiverse allows WiiU, 3DS, and 2DS owners to message other players, screenshot games, and share various content while connected to the service over WiFi. Players using Miiverse communities on smart phones and computers could easily connect with those of similar interests by going to the official website’s homepage, and browsing through promoted posts and groups at any time. Nintendo closing the service marks the end of these groups, as “all Miiverse services will become unavailable, such as viewing or making posts, and messaging with friends.”
Although some community members have expressed sadness towards the closure through posts on the Miiverse website, Nintendo says users will “…be able to request a download of all the posts you’ve made up to the day of the closure,” and gives directions on how to request the downloads. This is good news for Miiverse members who have used the service for a long time, as they have a chance to save drawings, messages, and screenshots that would otherwise be inaccessible later on.
Unfortunately, many WiiU and Nintendo 3DS titles utilized Miiverse for certain in-game features as well, which will be disabled after closure. Nintendo has compiled a list of games affected by the change and will continue to announce any future changes they plan to put into effect.
Miiverse is expected to close on November 7th at 10pm EST.
