Since the release of the Switch, Nintendo has given new life to previous titles originally released on the Wii U, which sold far less units than the Switch in its lifetime. The Switch even surpassed the Wii U in lifetime sales in February 2018, eleven months after its release. In light of the Switch’s success, Nintendo has brought several games over to the Switch as ports, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which has become the Switch’s best-selling game of all time, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Pokkén Tournament DX, and more. According to industry insider Emily Rogers, who has leaked accurate information about Nintendo before, we can expect more Wii U ports to the Switch in the future.
“I can also confirm that Nintendo has (at least) two more unannounced Wii U ports,” Rogers wrote in comment on a Resetera thread. “They are not difficult to guess because there aren’t many Wii U games left to port.”
There are a few major Wii U games that haven’t been ported yet that Rogers could be referring to. Such possibilities include Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, and Star Fox Zero. There’s also the possibility that games remastered for the Wii U could make their way over to the Switch, such as the popular Zelda titles The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.
Any possible Wii U ports could be released after Animal Crossing: New Horizons, according to Rogers. She claims Nintendo “is obviously treating Animal Crossing as their big March title,” so they will focus primarily on Animal Crossing: New Horizons during the first quarter of 2020. Because of this, Nintendo may release the rest of their big 2020 titles during the second half of the year, which could provide room in their release calendar for Wii U ports in the first half of the year after Animal Crossing releases on March 20.
