With a new Nintendo console comes the latest in a long line of Pokémon games. First revealed alongside the other Switch 2 games, Pokémon Legends Z-A sparked much discussion given the legacy that it had to live up to. Now fans finally have a chance to learn more about the game before it arrives through the overview trailer that Nintendo put out on their YouTube channel.
Like the previous Pokémon Legends game, Pokémon Legends Z-A gives players the opportunity to freely roam around the map. In this case, the trailer introduces Lumiose City, an urban setting meant to bring people together with Pokémon. Players will explore various wild zones throughout the city, each of which house a variety of friendly and aggressive Pokémon. Like with any Pokémon game, these opponents can be battled and caught. The open world nature of the game removes the transition between exploring and battling present in other games from the series, making for a quicker experience. The combat is also an evolution of the classic Pokémon formula, with an emphasis on timing the cooldowns of attacks to maximize efficiency.
Halfway through the trailer, the name of the game is explained through the town’s rank system. At night, players are able to challenge other trainers in order to increase their rank from Z up through the alphabet. In standard Pokémon fashion, this climb to be the best coincides with a goal to protect the world from destructive forces. Other trainers from Team MZ will help to investigate and defeat rogue Pokémon that have Mega Evolved spontaneously throughout the city. To help, players will be able to use Mega Evolutions of their own on old and new Pokémon.
The trailer also showed off the game’s local and online multiplayer. In it, players are tasked with defeating more Pokémon around the city than opponents. The game will be available to play on October 16th.
