Nintendo Direct Reveals Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 74 Character Roster, World Of Light & More

Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed the final pieces of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate puzzle. The game will have 74 playable characters with more to be added later, and the Direct revealed “World of Light”, which is the campaign for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Also, for fans of Amiibo, several Super Smash Bros. Ultimate related ones were given release dates, some of which will launch alongside the game.

During the Direct, the final two fighters that make up the base roster were revealed. Ken, from Street Fighter, is an echo fighter who will play like Ryu, but with faster move sets. The other fighter revealed was Incineroar, a Pokemon from Sun and Moon. After these characters were revealed, Director Masahiro Sakurai announced plans for new fighters, made from scratch, coming in the future. There will be five sets of DLC, which will each include a new fighter, stage, and new music tracks. Each set will cost $5.99. You can also purchase all DLC packs as part of the Fighters Pass. The Pass includes every piece of content that will be released by February 2020, and will cost $24.99. Also announced was Piranha Plant, a bonus character that’s free for those who purchases the game before January 31, 2019.

“World of Light” is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s story mode. It has players traveling across an overworld taking on the many fighters that make up the roster. It looks like this might be how you will unlock the roster that you can use for the rest of the game. Another thing to take note of is the many different ways you’ll play the mode. It doesn’t seem to just be fighting, but some puzzle elements are part of the game as well. “World of Light” also seems to implement the new Spirts system which replaces the series’ traditional trophy system. Spirits can be attached to either the playable fighters or the support characters. They act as power-ups and can be leveled up as well.

Lastly, the Ridley, Inkling, and Wolf Amiibo are going to launch when the game launches. Three more Amiibos will come in February and five more will be available later in 2019. King K. Rool, Ice Climbers, and the recently revealed Piranha Plant will come in February, while Isabelle, Pichu, Ken, Young Link, and Daisy will arrive in 2019.

The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Switch bundle releases tomorrow, November 2. The bundle comes with a Nintendo Switch system, a branded dock and branded joy-cons decked out with Smash characters and the logo, and a download code for the game. For players more comfortable with the traditional controller setup, the Nintendo Gamecube controller and adapter are set to launch tomorrow as well. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases on December 7.
