Nintendo Announces Super NES Classic Edition

Nintendo announced today their all new Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition, or SNES Classic for short.  The new SNES Classic will be a remake of the 1991 SNES console, the fondly-remembered gaming system that many consider to be a paragon of the golden era of 16-bit gaming.

Launching on September 29 of this year, the SNES Classic will be a sleeker, miniaturized version of the original SNES, and come pre-loaded with 21 installed classic games, including Super Mario World, Super Metroid, F-ZERO, and more.  The console will be connectable to any modern TV or monitor through an included HDMI cable, and has a suggested retail price of $79.99 USD.

On the release of this classic console reboot, Doug Bowser of Nintendo of America stated:

While many people from around the world consider the Super NES to be one of the greatest video game systems ever made, many of our younger fans never had a chance to play it.  With the Super NES Classic Edition, new fans will be introduced to some of the best Nintendo games of all time, while longtime fans can relive some of their favorite retro classics with family and friends.

Of special note with the SNES Classic is the inclusion of Star Fox 2, the sequel to the classic Star Fox for SNES that was developed and prepared for release back in 1995, but never released.  Although the game was effectively finished and ready to publish, Star Fox 2 was withheld from the public back in the 1990s because, reportedly, Nintendo wanted to leave room for a new Star Fox game for their hot new console about to be released, the Nintendo 64.  Now, with the SNES Classic, players will be able to unlock access to Star Fox 2 by beating the first level in Star Fox on the console, and finally experience the original Star Fox sequel we once thought lost.

The full list of games on the SNES Classic is as follows:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
