Nintendo Announces Lifetime and Quarter Sales Numbers For The Switch, Is Now Their Best-Selling Console Of All-Time

Nintendo has released their sales numbers for the latest quarter. These sales have indicated few milestones that the company has reached and indicated the potential for more milestones that may come. In the most recent report, Nintendo has indicated that the Nintendo Switch has reached a total sales number of 103.54 million units. This number comes almost three years after the original console was released back in March of 2017. These numbers have officially beaten out the previous record for a Nintendo console that was held by the Wii. Previously, the record for Nintendo’s most sold console was at 101.63 million.

Since the 2017 release, the Switch has seen different versions of the console be released that provide different ways to play as well. The newest Switch OLED model sold 3.99 million consoles in the first quarter that it was available. In comparison, Switch Lite sold about  5.19 million units in its first quarter and accounted for 17.87 million units in total. These results indicate that the standard Switch has sold 81.68 million units to bring that total number together.

While the Nintendo Switch may have the record for the most bought console by the company, there is still quite some ground to make up on the original Nintendo DS. The handheld device has a total lifetime sales number of 154.02 since it was released in 2004. In addition to Nintendo DS, the original Game Boy was released in 1989 and has accounted for 118.69 million sales since it was first launched.

Similar to the potential struggles that the PS5 and Xbox may face due to the ongoing chip shortage, Nintendo is expecting a slower sales rate in 2022. As a result, Nintendo has said that they are expecting to sell a total of 23 million Switch consoles in the coming year. Despite this expected struggle, it has been very encouraging that the console has hit over 100 million in such a short period of time in comparison to the records that it is striving for.
