When last we heard about the upcoming System Shock remake developer Nightdive Studios had released faithful remake of the game’s opening on Steam. The studio has been quiet about the game since then, but yesterday Project Director Jason Fader announced on the PlayStation Blog that System Shock would come to PS4.
For those unfamiliar with the game Fader helpfully gives his own description of the game.
Imagine you’re a hacker in the future. You’re trapped on a space station with a megalomaniacal AI bent on mankind’s destruction named SHODAN. You need to survive and defeat her, or mankind will be lost. No pressure, right? Oh, and you’ll be facing her monstrous constructs and warped mutations of humans along the way. Your tools are your wits, weapons you find, computer systems to hack, and corners you can hide in. Good luck!
The reason for the PS4 version, Fader says, was the demand for it. “It’s still early in the project, but there was such a huge demand for a PS4 version that we immediately did what we could to make that happen.” With that demand and the extra workload, the team needs the best, which they have, according to Fader.
Nightdive has acquired help from all over, including devs from “Planetside, Fallout, and even the original System Shock“. The studio is also working with the original voice actor for the evil AI, SHODAN.
Neither the PC version of the game or the PS4 version has a concrete release date with PC version slated for a 2017 release date and the PS4 version expected in Q1 2018.
The anticipated third installment of the System Shock franchise is a long way off as well being described as in the “early concept stages of development.”
