One of the most critically acclaimed titles has once again made another major milestone. NieR: Automata has now officially sold more than 7.5 million copies worldwide, and according to Square Enix and PlatinumGames, accounts for both shipped and sold statistics. In addition, these new numbers also account for both digital and physical sales, making it one of Platinum’s most successful IPs. This new statistic is a huge jump from the previous number, which was around four million units sold back in 2019.
Considering the extremely packed landscape of the video game market, this achievement is nothing to laugh at. NieR: Automata has come a long way from being one of the more obscure entries in a spin-off series to one of the most beloved titles in video game history. The main reason for this massive jump is more than likely due to the title being re-released for one of the hottest home consoles in history, the Nintendo Switch. Despite being readily available since 2017, the title was mainly a PlayStation 4 and PC for the first year of its existence. Starting in 2018, it came to the Xbox One, and then, more than four years later, it finally arrived on a Nintendo system in October 2022.
As we already mentioned, NieR: Automata was a sequel of Nier, which itself received remake recently, and a spin-off of another Square Enix franchise, Drakenguard. Taking an already complex storyline and making even more intricate, the game was hailed as one of the best JRPGs of 2017 and is considered one of the best titles of all time. It went on to be nominated for several awards at The Game Awards 2017 and took home Best Score/Music.
