Niantic Collaborates with the United Nations for New Pokémon Go Event Celebrating World Tourism Day

Niantic has announced their partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to bring a new event to Pokémon Go. The in-game event will be the first-ever celebration of World Tourism Day and will start tomorrow, September 26, at 1 PM PST. During the event, players will receive a few new perks and opportunities to catch certain Pokémon.

This event gives Pokémon only found in specific regions of the world the time to shine. Many region-specific Pokémon will be available in Eggs (obtained from their real-world regions) for the first time ever, which includes Farfetch’d, Kangaskhan, Tauros, Heracross, Corsola, Volbeat, Illumise, Torkoal, Zangoose, Seviper, Lunatone, Solrock, Tropius, Relicanth, Pachirisu, Mime Jr. Chatot, Pansage, Pansear, Panpour, Heatmor, and Durant. Of these Pokémon, Tauros, Illumise, Seviper, Solrock, Shellos, and Panpour are available throughout North America, while Pachirisu and Carnivine, are available in Alaska/Canada and the Southeast U.S. respectively. (You can find more information on which regions these Pokémon are available in here.) Additionally, players may encounter Shiny Seviper or Shiny Zangoose. Mime Jr., which evolves into Mr. Mime, is making its official debut in Pokémon Go during this event.

A new customization option will also be available for players, as they can obtain a UNWTO T-shirt for their trainer avatars in the Style Shop. Players who trade Pokémon during this event can do so for 25% less Stardust than would normally be required. Players can earn double the XP from visiting PokéStops they haven’t visited before. Finally, there will be special themed Field Research tasks for a limited time.

The event runs from September 26 to Tuesday, October 1, at 1 PM PST, giving trainers around five days to take advantage of all these new bonuses.

While this event marks a first for Niantic in terms of collaboration with the United Nations, it’s not the only event on Pokémon Go’s horizon. They recently revealed details about next month’s Community Day, which will take place on October 12 and feature Trapinch. In the meantime, players can continue discovering the newly added Gen 5 Pokémon.
