Next Tetris 99 Maximus Cup to Feature Luigi’s Mansion 3

Later this month, Nintendo will release Luigi’s Mansion 3 on Halloween. Before that, eager fans can get a taste for the game through a new Tetris 99 Halloween event running this upcoming weekend. Running October 25 through 28, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can participate in the latest Maximus Cup event, which will feature Luigi and his new gooey-counterpart, Gooigi, from Luigi’s Mansion 3.

Per previous Maximus Cups, players who earn enough points will unlock a new theme for their game. After earning 100 points, players can use a Luigi’s Mansion 3 theme, which will change the background art, music, and Tetrimino design, as seen in the video above. Players earn points by winning games and ranking highly among others, as Tetris 99 pits players against each other to complete their puzzles quickly in live time.

Gooigi will be featured in the event ahead of his Luigi’s Mansion 3 debut. In Luigi’s Mansion 3, players can use both Luigi and Gooigi to progress through levels. Gooigi has a few skills that Luigi doesn’t have, such as walking through spikes and barred windows, which will undoubtedly help players solve some of the puzzles they encounter. Luigi himself will have a few new skills as well, such as Slam, Suction Shot, and Burst. Though single players can switch off between the two, the game will also support local co-op for the entire game, in which two players can control Luigi and Gooigi simultaneously, working together to progress through the game. The game will also have two multiplayer modes outside of the story mode, which will feature some sort of paid DLC.

In the past, Tetris 99 has had Maximus Cups promoting other Nintendo franchises, such as Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Super Kirby Clash. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers receive Tetris 99 for free with their subscription, in addition to a library of classic Nintendo and Super Nintendo games, though Tetris 99 can also be purchased physically with a 12-month membership built in.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 will launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 31.
