Next-Gen VR System Announced For PlayStation 5

More than four years ago, the PlayStation VR was launched, offering PlayStation players a new way to experience Play. Since then, they have released games that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward such as Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil: Biohazard. With the launch of PlayStation 5 and the next generation of gaming, many have been wondering if VR still fits with PlayStation’s plans. Today, that answer has been revealed as Sony and PlayStation announced that a new VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5. PlayStation has made it clear that it will not be coming in 2021 as development is still underway but they have revealed some details regarding what’s new and different with the new next-gen VR system and how it differs from PS VR.

On the PlayStation Blog, Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management said that PlayStation’s next-generation VR system will be all about “enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.”

The new, next-gen VR system will enhance everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will take one cord to connect to the PS5, unlike the PS VR. One of the big differences between this new VR system and PS VR will be the controller. The new VR controller will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense controller to further enhance the immersion that you get with virtual reality.

“With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever,” Nishino said. “We look forward to sharing more details in the future!”
