Newest Girls Make Games Summer Camp to be Hosted by Sony

Three years ago Laila Shabir put a game on hold to start a Kickstarter for a good cause that would help girls learn how to design and program video games. Polygon reported on a press release today announcing that Sony would be hosting a three week camp in California in collaboration with Girls Make Games.

“Numerous reports have shed light on the growing number of female gamers, but less than 15 percent of the games industry workforce is women,” said Laila Shabir, founder and chief executive officer of Girls Make Games. “We’re thrilled about working with PlayStation to encourage and empower more young women to learn about and pursue careers in technology and game development.”

Within the press release it was announced that Sony’s San Mateo office would be hosting this years camp and that it will be open to any girls aged 11-14. Once there, they will be taught by industry professionals on how to design, program, and publish video games. The goal at the end of the camp is for them to have created their own game with coaching from smaller game studios and the powerhouse of Sony behind them. For a select few, Sony will provide scholarships to help get qualified applicants connected to female mentors already in the industry.

“Participants work in teams to create fully functional games, visit local game studios, and interact with industry professionals. PlayStation will also provide scholarship opportunities for GMG participants, along with mentoring from leading female executives and developers from across the company.”

Girls Make Games was originally started from a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 and since its founding day, has grown each year. It’s hosted events such as summer camps, game jams, and workgroups in nearly 40 cities around the world and continue to see more and more excited young girls ready to jump into the industry.
