Last week’s 1.0.3 update finally brought the ability for New World players to transfer servers, allowing them to move their leveled player-characters from one server to another. Transferring ability was slowly rolled out on a region by region basis, to allow the development team at Amazon Games to monitor the transfers and make sure it all went smoothly.

Following the release of the transferring ability, however, problems arose. After transferring roughly around ~150,000 player-characters, the ability to transfer had to be shut down, due to some characters ending up with “invalid data state[s].” This news was met with player upset, many complaining about no longer being able to transfer out of their servers.
This is gonna be the fundamental problem with the game. Great premise but, they overestimated the value of competition and underestimated the value of convenience. +

Since pausing server transfers, Amazon Games has not brought them back online. The New World team posted an update two days ago, stating that although transfers had yet to be re-enabled, doing so was “top priority” for their team. They went on to state that until they had more reliable information on the matter, they would not be given an estimated ETA for when the feature would be re-enabled.
It seems that the transfers also caused several game breaking bugs, from minor ones to people’s progress being reverted to a “safe” point prior to the patch. It is of no surprise that server transfers have yet to return, as these bugs must be fixed before the development team can even come to tackle the issue of transfers.
As of now, server transfers are placed on hold. When they will return is still up in the air.
