Many arcade games during the 1980’s had a very similar style due to the technology of the time. So a lot were pixelated, side-scrolling, or from behind racing, or all within that realm. It wasn’t until 1983 that Cinemetronics had worked with famous animator Don Bluth and video game designer Rick Dyer to create a one of a kind type of arcade game known as Dragon’s Lair.
Dragon’s Lair was a game using laserdisc and put it’s graphics above most other games if not for the technology used, but for the fact that it was entirely hand drawn. In an online Nostalgia Critic review/interview with Don Bluth for Dragon’s Lair, Bluth had explained that the entire game was roughly 20 minutes of animation, and each section was a threat, and a result. Because of its uniqueness, wonderful animation, and original concepts and style, Dragon’s Lair became an instant classic… for all of that and the fact that it is still considered one of the hardest games to play. But despite it being difficult, it still is considered a masterpiece even by today’s standards. Garnering several HD remastered versions on PC, console, and mobile devices.
And recently, New Wave Toys announced that they’re bringing back the original arcade style of the 80’s classic with adding Dragon’s Lair to it’s Replicade family. The last Replicade that had been covered here was the Street Fight II: Champion Edition. And now another classic joins with the official license from Digital Leisure, who had helped with the HD Remastered version.
For the Dragon’s Lair x RepliCade, it follows the same mini replica of the original arcade machine down to a sixth scale. Though, the technology used is more modern, as the screen is a 3.5” LED screen (a 4:3 ratio), and runs the original Dragon’s Lair. The craftsmanship is the same high quality materials and designs with the wood cabinet, the diecast metal coin door, and storage compartment. The art is the same as the original arcade done on 3M vinyl overlays, and it has a rechargeable battery so it can have continuous play.
The Dragon’s Lair x RepliCade mini arcade machine will be available for $119.99 USD. Fans and collectors can sign-up to be notified for when it goes on sale on the official website and store page.
