New Wave-Based Survival Mode Coming to Uncharted 4’s New Update

It’s been 6 months that gamers have been playing Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The game, which came out back in May, has been raved by critics and gamers alike as one of the best of the year. However, coming from a developer that prides itself as giving a sense of urgency and escalation with a signature tone, many thought the game still needed something more to attain that level of energy. The action-adventure game does include a tense and chaotic firefight similar to Halo’s and it also includes a horde mode that is similar to Gears of War. But there still felt like something was missing from the game. Which is why, according to Polygon, Naughty Dog announced today that they will be giving the game a new wave-based horde-style mode to its multiplayer component.

The new wave-based horde mode doesn’t, however, include zombies, as many hearing the name might think. Instead, you’ll face shoreline mercenaries and much tougher enemies like sniper, brutes and hunters in what will be 50 increasingly difficult waves’ across 10 different maps. The mode will be split into 10 sets of five waves, allowing you to save your progress as you go along which can possibly save you countless hours in comparison to the game’s previous mode. You’ll also be able to choose a difficulty setting from the start and if you beat the Hard setting, you’ll be able to unlock Crushing.

The new horde mode will feature a boss battle with a Pirate Warlord every 10 waves – a reanimated corpse of one of the founders of Libertalia. As you make your way through all the waves, you’ll be able to earn in-game cash that you can spend to unlock weapons and gear at crates on the map. The mode will also mix up the gameplay with new objectives and qualifiers that will require you to defend a particular section of a map, collect treasures before a timer runs out or defeat specific marked enemies. To make the mode even more difficult, the mode will also ask you to kill an enemy in a specific way – headshots or melee attacks.

You can also tackle on the survival mode alone with an AI companion or in a group with two friends. Although the previous Uncharted installment, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, featured a local split-screen co-op, Uncharted 4 will not feature it.

The new mode will be released as part of a free update scheduled to come out in mid-December. Before it going live though, the mode will be playable at the PlayStation Experience 2016, which will run from December 3-4 in Anaheim, California.
