Today, PlayStation has released a new trailer showcasing how the world comes for you in Days Gone, the upcoming exclusive title releasing next week. The trailer goes through the many enemies that Deacon St. John will have to face such as the Freakers, wildlife, and several other human factions.
Bend Studio decided to set Days Gone in a world that is dangerous anywhere you go because ” we hadn’t seen it a lot in videogames and it brought something to the experience that we really needed.”
The danger doesn’t just come from the Freakers, humans affected by a virus; “it comes from Mauraders who want to snipe you off your bike, it comes from the weather that will make it impossible for you to stay on a muddy trail, the world changes after dark, more Freakers come out. It’s brutal and it’s harsh.” said John Garvin, Writer, Creative and Game Director on Days Gone.
A key storyline in Days Gone focuses on the Freakers and how they change and evolve throughout the game. There are several types of Freakers who each have their own challenges when you face them. Swarmers are adult male and females who roam in groups. Screamers will bring in swarms to make it difficult to escape. Breakers are big brutes.
Days Gone will also have infected animals such as wolves, crows, and bears; and several other human factions. There is a cult called Rest In Peace that worships Freakers. Another faction called the Rippers actually want to be like Freakers. They will dress like them and scar themselves. A unique gameplay element to this group is that because Rippers want to be like Freakers, they will not attack Freakers.
John Garvin also said that “when you’re playing Days Gone, you just have to be aware of everything around you all the time. The thing about a game like Days Gone is its the sum of its parts”.
Days Gone launches April 26, 2019 for the PlayStation 4.
