Life is Strange: Double Exposure is the upcoming fourth mainline installment in the Life is Strange series and follows Max Caulfield attempting to solve the murder of her closest friend at college Safi. In her attempts to use her Rewind powers to save Safi she accidentally ends up shifting into a different timeline where Safi is still alive, but her killer is on the loose in both timelines. On a mission to catch Safi’s killer, and save her in the timeline she’s alive in, Max takes it upon herself to investigate both timelines. Max’s powers are different from what players have been used to in previous games, and a recent trailer released during Gamescom is here to give players the insider scoop on the new powers.
The trailer focuses on showcasing Max’s two main abilities used in the game: Pulse and Timeline Shift. Pulse allows Max to get glimpses of the other timeline without actually shifting across to it. This can be a useful tool to scout for danger before jumping timelines. Pulse will also allow Max to overhear conversations happening in the other timeline, perfect for detective work. Pulse can be used at any time, the power to peer across timelines at the player and Max’s fingertips always. Timeline Shifting is a bit more limited, only able to happen at specific locations where the veil between the timelines is thinner.
The two timelines grow increasingly distinct from each other as changes impact characters and they grow in different directions. As players and Max go back and forth, be sure to keep a grasp on which timeline you’re currently in. Max can sometimes have response options that showcase her getting the timelines mixed up, and how this might impact the narrative remains to be seen. Luckily there are a few gameplay and environmental indicators to help. There are options to display which timeline players are in when Shifting, and the timeline with Safi is alive is decked in festive Christmas decorations.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure is set to release for the Xbox X/S series, PS 5, and PC via Steam and the Windows Store on October 29th, 2024.
