FPS games often come with certain design elements that add character to the individual entries. Single player mature titles, such as the upcoming game, Beneath, can often be found with bloody, explosive combat throughout dark, enclosed spaces. Beneath was developed by Camel 101 out of passion and published by Wired Productions. Recently, the game received a release trailer showing off the gameplay that players can expect on October 28th when it comes out.
The game takes on a Lovecraftian style through events one could find in an action movie. Set in the Atlantic Ocean, players will investigate Omnium Corporation in search for a cure for their ailing daughter. The various research stations that the main character travels to throughout the story promise to reveal a dark truth behind their operations. Within the stations, players will be faced with trained soldiers and monstrous horrors for two different kinds of classic FPS combat. The trailer shows these creatures in greater detail, including humanoid, shambling enemies and the tentacle of a massive monster.
The game gives players a variety of tools to combat the various hazards that the environment will throw at them. According to the Steam store page, beyond standard shooter combat, players will have access to explosives and the ability to expand their weapons to progress through the game. They will also need to ensure that they are well-stocked on ammunition, which will be in limited supply in the cramped hallways. The environment will also be malleable to aid certain combat situations. As a final challenge, the monsters will take a toll on the main character’s sanity itself, a staple of Lovecraft settings.
Beneath is stated to be inspired by the classics, which shows in its presentation of its basic concepts. The release trailer shows footage reminiscent of the gory battles of many gamers’ childhoods, which they will have a chance to revisit when the game releases on October 28th to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
