Naughty Dog announced a new upcoming trailer for The Last of Us Part II in a brief and reticent tweet. The trailer will go live tomorrow, May 6th, at 7am Pacific Time. There wasn’t much revealed, but a small clip accompanied the announcement.

The voices of the main characters, Joel and Ellie, can be heard over a black screen with the games title, which then transitions to the trailer announcement. It seems like Ellie has plans to do something, probably in regards to some sort of fight or conflict, and Joel reminds her that everything has “a cost.” The teaser is very nimble, but hopefully is a set up for a meaty trailer. This will be the games first trailer since receiving its new release date of June 19th. The games original date was pushed back indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Uncertainty regarding its launch was compounded by a round of leaks revealing some of the games plot details. Spoilers included leaked footage that is rumored to have come from a disgruntled former employee of Naughty Dog. None of this has been confirmed, but the COVID-19 situation has definitely had a major impact on the studios launch plans. Things seems to be making progress though, as one of their other titles, Ghost of Tsushima, received its long awaited release date of July 17th.
It is a good sign that Naughty Dog feels comfortable getting players excited for The Last of Us Part II again, instilling confidence that this release date won’t change again. Of course, the situation in the world is ever changing, and game studios were simply forced to deal with the situation and adapt just like everyone else.
