Shovel Knight by Yacht Club Games was a 2014 action platforming game that really hearkened back to the era of action platformers like Mega Man and Sonic, and it came at such a time that the nostalgia for those games really hit, and thus Shovel Knight became an overnight (overKnight?) sensation, shovel hopping his way to Top 10 lists from gamers everywhere, but the series has been a bit quiet since the complete release of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove in 2019, with the exception of the Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon puzzle game. But as of today, the Yacht Club Games Twitter account has gone on record to officially announce that a new mainline Shovel Knight game is in development.

And to entice players to dig a bit deeper and see what the future holds for the next Shovel Knight, Yacht Club Games have said to play through the old Shovel Knight games again to see what the future may have in store.
And for those of you eager to uncover what’s coming next, you might find subtle clues scattered throughout our previous games.

Now, this isn’t much to go on, and even the video in the announcement Tweet doesn’t really show anything besides the company logo, but still the confirmation that a new Shovel Knight is in development is no doubt exciting news for those who were big fans of the original. The original game, as stated, was something of an internet darling, even famously (or infamously depending on your point of view) taking fan made original characters from the internet like The Baz and Reize because internet culture was so ingrained in the game’s DNA. And now, 10 years after the original game’s release, we may see the nostalgia that powered the first release come back in force.
If you want to experience Shovel Knight yourself in the wake of this announcement, then Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, the complete edition of the Shovel Knight game, is available for PC through Steam, as well as Playstations 3 and 4 (not to mention the Vita), Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
