Team Asano is the team behind SquareEnix hits Octopath Traveler I and II, and Triangle Strategy, and they may be cooking something up. All three games are known for their charming pixelated sprites and difficult turn-based combat. According to X user @MbKKssTBhz5, by way of Youtuber PlayerEssence, a new project by Team Asano is in the works, specifically a sequel to one of their major games. They then said that this sequel would not be Octopath Traveler III.
Essence then suggested that based on that distinction the most likely games to get the sequel would be: Triangle Strategy, Bravely Default 2, and Live A Live (Remake). All three were the last three games made by Team Asano before Octopath Traveler II. Of these three Essence believes Triangle Strategy to have the highest chance of getting the sequel.
Triangle Strategy was released in 2022 and met with overall positive reviews as critics praised nearly every aspect. With an 84 on Metacritic, it seems to be holding up just fine. The game centers around the actions of protagonist Serenoa Wolffort and his three main allies as he deals with political crises across the three nation states. Depending on the choices that Serenoa convinces his allies to decide on translates into assigning one of the game’s endings. The game shares similarities in terms of art style with Octopath Traveler, so a sequel might mean a return of the current aesthetic. Live A Live (Remake) also has a traditional, pixelated art style.
Essence believes that Live A Live is the least likely to receive a sequel. For one, it was released most recently in 2022. Secondly, it undersold in comparison to Triangle Strategy and Bravely Default 2. Live A Live was originally released on the Super Famicom in 1994. It features different scenarios set in different time periods against villains all featuring some form of Odio in their names. A thrilling adventure, its sequel might be unlikely given the years since its initial release. Finally, Bravely Default 2, the third game in the Bravely Default series was released in 2021. Despite being the third game it was called Bravely Default II because it featured a new story unlike the first two. It has a chibi art style and has a group of protagonists attempting to locate four elemental crystals in order to defeat an evil force. According to Essence, we might be do for some form of Bravely Default remaster as opposed to a new title in the series. Either way fans of Team Asano’s other games might want to keep their ear to the ground, excited for whatever is coming next.
